| I
got a postcard from Ross from Zurich, updating me on the trip, and telling
me that he and Mauz wanted to start jamming when they got home. Through
some strange twist of luck, I was able to secure five nights per week
in a rehearsal space for $200 rent a month. The first few practices consisted
of the three of us walking to Dolores Park to score weed, drinking beer,
and working on a few riffs we came up with. Ross brought Paul into the
mix and the music really started coming together. There was just the problem
of the singer. I felt real dumb when Ross suggested Mike, it suddenly
seemed so obvious to me. Who better for the job than someone I had initially
considered a real "buttfucker of the night", only to come full
circle and really appreciate what Mauz would later define simply as an
asshole detector. Mike completed the puzzle, and then some. We played our first show in January, 1998, opening for Talk Is Poison, El Dopa, and His Hero is Gone, what a line up! By the end of 1998 we'd played around 40 local shows, and did a 5 week North American tour, supporting Unhinged from Liege, Belgium. As far as the music, I can only describe it as Medication Time. We were compared to such bands as Rudimentary Peni and Born Against, and these bands definitely influenced us. To me, however, the music was merely a biproduct of five dudes showing each other how to party for real, coast to coast, and across borders. Ther LP is basically all the songs we ever wrote, and the CD is the same songs, and one of the two covers we learned. |
